Welcome to our new website!  We hope this section serves as a valuable resource about breastfeeding.

West Hawaii Early Head Start (WHEHS) and its parent agency Family Support Services of West Hawaii (FSSWH) requested and obtained supplemental funding from a local foundation to initiate the Big Island Breastfeeding Support Project in the spring of 2008.  The aim of this project is to expand and evaluate the evidence-based practices used within West Hawaii Early Head Start to promote and support extended exclusive breastfeeding in a manner that builds upon cultural strengths and acknowledges traditional practices.

This month... 

latch... latch... LATCH.

This is one of the most important steps in breastfeeding. If a good latch is not established it can be very painful and is one of the most common problems in breastfeeding. To get a better idea place your tongue to the roof of your mouth. The first part of your roof you will feel ridges. Go further back you will the hard palette. Go further back and you will feel a softer part this is your soft palette. The soft palette is where you want your nipple to land in your baby’s mouth. When a shallow latch happens your nipple rubs against the hard palette which can create friction causing blisters and soars.
