Organizational Profile

Family Support Services of West Hawaii (FSSWH) was founded in 1979 as a grassroots organization serving families to prevent child abuse and neglect.  Its mission is “to support families and communities in providing love and care for our children.” FSSWH has an annual operating budget of approximately $3.6 million through its fifteen (15) programs and approximately eighty (80) staff members.  Programs serve children, youth, and families along 150 miles of coastline from northern district of Kohala to the southern district of Ka`u.  FSSWH has offices and staff based in Waimea, Kailua-Kona, and Ka`u, Family Centers in both the Ka`u (located in Na`alehu) and North Kohala (located in Hawi) districts, and a Parent Center at the Kealakehe public school complex in Kailua-Kona. 

Programs within FSSWH are divided into the following four areas: 

 

  • Healthy Start - child abuse and neglect prevention services to all families with new babies in West Hawaii; does psychosocial screening on all births in West Hawai`i and provides home visitation and support services to families determined to be at risk for child abuse and neglect. The Enhanced Healthy Start program utilizes a similar model for families involved with Child Welfare Services and its family strengthening service providers.

 

  • Early Childhood Education - including Early Head Start, Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY), family literacy endeavors, a Parent Center in a public school, and early intervention services for infants and toddlers with developmental delays in North Hawai`i.
  • Youth Development - including youth service centers, street outreach to homeless youth, parent centers, and a variety of school-based after-school activities for school-age children.
  • West Hawai`i Fatherhood Initiative - a community-driven support program featuring one-on-one mentoring, fathering classes, social activities, public awareness, and trainings and conferences.




Title of Position:  Neighborhood Woman/Malama Perinatal Program

Location of Position:  Part-time in Kona

List the Essential Job Duties: Provides outreach in their communiteis in order to assist with enrollment and engagement into early, culturally-sensitive prenatal care for the Malama Perinatal Program.  Knows the resources in their community. 

List the Job Qualifications/Requirements: High school diploma, or equivalent and bilingual English/Marshallese.


Title of Position:   Occupational Therapist for NHCDP

Location of Position:  in Waimea

List the Essential Job Duties: Provides pediatric occupational therapy services for infants, toddlers and young children with disabilities, or who are at risk for disabiling conditions.  These services are provided in collaboration with families and other professional staff and reflect relationship-based services as well as cultural/linguistic sensitivity.

List the Job Qualifications/Requirements: An M.S. in an accredited program of Occupational Therapy or a B. S. and two years' experience in the field of pediatric occupational therapy.  Knowledge of infant/toddler development, including social-emotional development, and some knowledge of sensory integration techniques.  Demonstrated: evaluation and assessment skills; ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team; and ability and sensitivity in working with families of various ethnic, socioeconomic, educational and experiential backgrounds.  Good computer skills including Word, Excel, and MS Office and good verbal and written communication skills.  Previous experience working with young children with autism and their families preferred.


Title of Position:  Early Interventionist

Location of Position:  Full-time in North Hawaii - Waimea Office

List of Essential Job Duties: Seeking a very special person to provide support to families with infants and toddlers, including those with special needs, through home visiting, play and lean groups and family support activities in North Kohala, Waimea, Waikoloa and Hamakua.  This person will plan and implement delivery of early intervention services including screening and assessment.  

List of Job Qualifications/Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education, Human Services or related Field.  Five years experience working with infants and toddlers/young children and their families is preferred.


New Ka'u Child Development Program Positions

Title of Position:  Program Manager/Clinical Supervisor

Location of Position:  Part-time/Full-time in Ka'u

List of Essential Job Duties: Provide oversight to program including professional staff training and development, program administration, data collection, quality assurance and improvement activities.  Provide reflective supervision to staff and direct service to children and their families.  

List of Job Qualifications/Requirements: Master's Degree in Social Work or equivalent degree in a related field, five years experience in a clinical practice with knowledge of early childhood development and family counseling.  Experience in staff supervision preferred.

Title of Position:  Early Childhood Special Educator

Location of Position:  Part-time in Ka'u

List of Essential Job Duties: Provide cognitive, social/emotional assessments and evaluations, oversee each child's individualized program, develop and conduct special education activities.  

List of Job Qualifications/Requirements: Master's Degree in Early Childhood Special Education, Disabilities or a related field and a minimum of two years in supervision and coordination of direct service personnel.

Title of Position:  Early Interventionist

Location of Position:  Part-time in Ka'u

List of Essential Job Duties: Work as a partner with parents to implement special education activities, provide family training and parents support through home and community visits, and assist with adaptation of the natural environments and activities to support each child.  

List of Job Qualifications/Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in human development or early childhood education and a minimum of two years experience working with infants, toddlers and their families. 

Title of Position:  Care Coordinator

Location of Position:  Part-time in Ka'u

List of Essential Job Duties: Provide initial information given to families, link families to needed community resources and assist them to gain access to them as appropriate.  

List of Job Qualifications/Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in social work or related field and two years experience working in early intervention.  At least one year experience working in health and social services.

Title of Position:  Program Administrative Assistant

Location of Position:  Part-time in Ka'u

List of Essential Job Duties: Responsible for development, maintenance, and effective utilization of the management information system, including data collection and entry, monthly contract requirement/outcome reports, and quarterly data reports for DOH.  General clerical assistance and assist Program Manager with information management and quality assurance efforts.  

List of Job Qualifications/Requirements: Associate's Degree and two years of administrative experience.  Word processing, database and generation of statistical reports.  Ability to maintain a filing system and good communication skills.

Title of Position:  Speech/Language Pathologist

Location of Position:  Part-time or sub-contract in Ka'u

List of Essential Job Duties: Provide assessments, evaluations and direct service.  The therapist will also provide consultation to other members of the child's team, incorporating language enrichment activities into the home activities.  

List of Job Qualifications/Requirements: Master's Degree in Speech/Language Pathology and eligibility for certificate of clinical competence; state license required.  At least one year experience working with infants, toddlers and their families.

Title of Position:  Occupational Therapist

Location of Position:  Part-time or sub-contract in Ka'u

List of Essential Job Duties: Provide direct services as needed to infants, toddlers and their families and provide consultation to the primary interventionist working with the family.  

List of Job Qualifications/Requirements: Graduation from a school of occupational therapy approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals of the American Medical Association, including one year of supervised occupational therapy work experience in a recognized private or public agency; current registration with the American Occupational Therapy Association and one year experience working with infants, toddlers and their families.

Title of Position:  Physical Therapist

Location of Position:  Part-time or sub-contract in Ka'u

List of Essential Job Duties: Provide direct services as needed to infants, toddlers and their families and provide consultation to the primary interventionist working with the family.  

List of Job Qualifications/Requirements: Bachelor's Degree and graduation from a physical therapy curriculum approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals of the American Medical Association; state license required.  At least one year experience working with infants, toddlers and their families.
