Family Support Services of West Hawaii Selected As Reading Is Fundamental's National Program of the Month

Initiative Recognizes the Ongoing Efforts of Local Programs
Promoting Children's Literacy

WASHINGTON, June 3, 2010—Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the nation's oldest and largest children and families' literacy nonprofit organization, named Family Support Services of West Hawaii (FSSWH) as the Program of the Month for June.

Located in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, FSSWH spreads awareness about the lifelong consequences of child abuse and neglect. Founded in 1979, the organization's mission is to support families and communities in providing love and care for area children. FSSWH has several programs dedicated to supporting early childhood education and development for 3,500 Hawaii Island individuals and families each year.

Among their initiatives is RIF's Family Of Readers program, which involves parents and children in early literacy activities. Through the program, families are encouraged to read to and with their children. Additionally, children receive their choice of free books as well as access to the Family of Readers Lending Libraries courtesy of FSSWH family centers and home visiting programs.
