Press Release June 3, 2010
Family Support Services of West Hawaii Selected As Reading Is
Fundamental's National Program of the Month
Initiative Recognizes the Ongoing Efforts of Local Programs
Promoting Children's Literacy
WASHINGTON, June 3, 2010—Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the
nation's oldest and largest children and families' literacy
nonprofit organization, named Family Support Services of West
Hawaii (FSSWH) as the Program of the Month for June.
Located in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, FSSWH spreads awareness about
the lifelong consequences of child abuse and neglect. Founded in
1979, the organization's mission is to support families and
communities in providing love and care for area children. FSSWH
has several programs dedicated to supporting early childhood
education and development for 3,500 Hawaii Island individuals
and families each year.
Among their initiatives is RIF's Family Of Readers program,
which involves parents and children in early literacy
activities. Through the program, families are encouraged to read
to and with their children. Additionally, children receive their
choice of free books as well as access to the Family of Readers
Lending Libraries courtesy of FSSWH family centers and home
visiting programs.
"RIF is proud to honor Family Support Services of West Hawaii as
the program of the month for their dedication to improving
literacy for children and families," said Carol H. Rasco,
president and CEO of RIF. "We look forward to additional success
with this program as they overcome obstacles in the community."
RIF's Program of the Month initiative was launched to honor the
ongoing efforts of local programs to fulfill the mission of RIF,
which depends on innovative programs to promote children's
literacy. Thanks to thousands of volunteers, children all across
the country are discovering the joy of reading.
